Today, having the ability to adjust key network parameters in real time is essential in ensuring a high-quality user experience.  However, in order to make such dynamic adjustments requires knowledge about endpoints and users, the ability to monitor actual service levels, and policies dictating how and when to make adjustments.

Alcatel-Lucent's Application Fluent Network provides all of the control features needed to meet these requirements. It automatically recognizes endpoints and assigns profiles to regulate access and bandwidth usage. Autosensing features enable dynamic adjustments to network traffic to meet required service levels. And policies inform any actions needed to ensure superior network performance.

Let's look more closely at each of these automatic control features:

Profile Directed

The Application Fluent Network defines profiles for users, endpoints and applications globally and embeds them in the network switches. This helps to ensure that QoS and security requirements are met, and that the network is optimized for maximum workflow.


The Application Fluent Network's autosensing capabilities enable it to optimize itself for individual conversations. After initially allocating network resources based upon priority, it automatically recognizes each user and endpoint as they access the network, regardless of their location, and assigns the right profile. It also dynamically adjusts treatment of traffic, taking corrective action when the required service level for a particular conversation is not being met.

Policy Driven

With an embedded policy engine and rule set, the Application Fluent Network determines which actions to take in a number of situations, such as:

  • When an endpoint, user, or application requests access to the network
  • When required service levels are not being met for a particular conversation
  • If a move request for a virtual machine in the data center has been received
