Universidad de Extremadura updates its network core and data center with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise announced the deployment of state-of-the-art technology for the Network Core and Data Center of Universidad de Extremadura (Extremadura University), a public institution in Extremadura region of Spain. With near 20,000 students, 1,900 teachers and researchers, and more than 1,000 administrative staff distributed over four campuses, Extremadura University is the backbone of the higher education and research in the region.

The updated network core infrastructure and Data Center systems from Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise address the University’s needs for a network based on simplicity, resiliency and automated management, and one that provides a better user experience across its 4 campuses (Badajoz, Cáceres, Mérida and Plasencia). The new infrastructure provides storage and virtualization backup between the campuses of Badajoz and Cáceres, in order to accommodate increasing traffic of data, video and multimedia (nowadays, key elements of higher education). In addition, this solution consolidates the data and storage infrastructure by using FCoE technology, which provides an important cost savings for the University.

About the deployment
The implementation of this solution improves the educational, administrative and management activities of all the university staff by creating a secure data storage environment across campuses separated by 100 km. With this, the University gives students, teachers, administration and services staff better access to the storage of data they work with, and to specific applications used by each group. IT department also has full visibility and control of the Data Center virtual machines, and is able to separate and balance the traffic between the users and the Data Center via SPB (Shortest Path Bridging) technology.

The products used to implement the updated network include the OmniSwitch™ family for data centers (Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 10K and Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 6900) and the virtual machine and network management system provided by Alcatel-Lucent OmniVista™ 2500.

David Rodríguez Lozano, TI Director of the University, said: “The implemented solution will allow us to manage from the Network Core and the Data Centers of Universidad de Extremadura the increasing traffic generated by the new virtual education models, multimedia traffic, VoIP, and above all, the dramatic increase of mobile devices and applications traffic. It will also allow to scale the virtualization projects on chassis servers, and to migrate the SAN storage systems to a solution based on iSCSI and FCoE protocols over convergence 10/40 G Ethernet networks.

Jean-Clovis Pichon, Chief Executive Officer of Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Spain, added: “This project shows the commitment of La Universidad de Extremadura with the adoption of advanced information and communication technologies for its educational and research activities, and the capability of Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise to adapt its solutions to the needs of the educative community”.
