Hospital in Italy improves communications for employees

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise announces today the major upgrade of the IT infrastructure of the “Fondazione IRCCS Ca 'Grande Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico di Milano”.

The new solutions from Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise help the Foundation offer its employees an innovative phone system, open to the implementation of new, safer applications in terms of reliability and availability. The upgrade also helps safeguard the investments made in the past instead of completely replacing the existing solutions.

The communication management system of the Foundation was introduced in 2002 and, although properly maintained over the years, suffered in terms of technological limitations that could endanger safety, reliability and availability. It was therefore necessary to proceed with an update of central sites, to introduce the "spatial redundancy" feature and allow, in case of failure of the main Communication server, the automatic management of the issue without any interruption of any VoIP/TDM applications from the back-up server.

The implementation was managed by Com.Tel, a Business Partner that paid special attention to guarantee service continuity and to avoid overloading the core processes of the Hospital. The migration to the new VoIP environment allowed the Foundation to open the phone system to the implementation of new services such as, for example, using personal mobile devices through a "unified number" that can be activated even on smartphones.

The continuous evolution of the system will allow the Foundation to predict cost savings for the implementation of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), alongside or in place of DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunication) devices. It is an innovation not only directed to improve services to the customers but also to increase the work environment with consequent possibility of greater facilitation and satisfaction for employees in carrying out their daily activities within the hospital.
