Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise technology has been selected as part of an up to €13.4 million (DKK 100 Million) telecommunications infrastructure project at a major wind farm initiative in the UK sector of the North Sea. Semco Maritime A/S, the offshore contracting and engineering specialist, chose the Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise SIP telephony solution for the construction of infield and offshore-to-onshore communication networks at DONG Energy's wind farms located several miles off the coast of UK.
Key in the selection of the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX® Enterprise communication server for this major project is its certification by the international certification body and classification society, DNV GL, as being suitable for operations in a maritime environment and is robust enough to be able to withstand the unique requirements of offshore environments. The solution also met the strict requirements for interoperability with a range of maritime technology such as integration with the SemTETRA radio communication system, and the substation public announcement system for emergency broadcasts.
The project comprises four major wind farms made up of approx. 400 turbines and 9 substations and will be connected by two VoIP networks with a dedicated management system. These VoIP systems connect the communications hub on the offshore substation to each wind turbine, onshore office and maintenance centres. Two VoIP networks provide both DONG Energy engineers, and the UK's National Grid personnel access to their own communications network, while at the same time being integrated to provide a secure redundant communications path.
